NIOS State Open School (SOS)

The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) with current enrollment of about thirteen lakh students at Secondary and Senior Secondary stage is the largest open schooling organization in the world. However, it is not possible for NIOS alone to cater to the needs and variations of all regions of a multilingual multicultural country like India. It is difficult for one organization at the national level to extend its functions and coverage and increase its enrollment beyond certain limits. For "reaching the unreached", the Open Schooling System is required to be promoted and strengthened in the country.

To meet the regional diversity, the concept of State Open School (SOSs) has come up. Considering that education is state responsibility, eleven States of India also established Open Schools in the State with regional medium. NIOS have been providing professional and technical support to the states to establish such SOS, where necessary.

There are 8 states namely Uttar Pradesh, Orissa, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Assam, Chattisgarh, Uttranchal and Bihar who are in the process of setting up state Open Schools
  • Andhra Pradesh
  • Delhi
  • Haryana
  • Jammu & Kashmir
  • Karnataka
  • Kerala

  • Madhya Pradesh
  • Punjab
  • Rajasthan
  • Tamilnadu
  • West Bengal
